Whether you’re a beginner or looking to brush up on your knowledge of the game, understanding the rules is essential for a fair and enjoyable gameplay experience. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the rules of singles pickleball, covering everything from scoring and serving to faults and court positioning. Let’s dive in and enhance your understanding of this thrilling sport.
Quick Rule Guide:
Gameplay and Scoring:
In singles pickleball, games are played to 11 points, with a requirement to win by 2 points. It’s important to note that points can only be scored by the server. If a fault is committed by the receiver, the server earns a point. On the other hand, if a fault is committed by the server, they lose the serve.

Serving and Court Positioning:
The server starts the game from the right side of the court. When the server scores a point, they switch sides and serve from the left side of the court. This alternating pattern continues, ensuring that when the server’s score is even, they serve from the right side, and when their score is odd, they serve from the left side.
Underhand Serve and Service Area:
The serve in singles pickleball must be executed underhand, with the ball contacted below the server’s naval. Both feet of the server must remain behind the baseline while striking the serve. It’s important to avoid touching the baseline or the court until after the serve is struck. The serve must be aimed into the opponent’s diagonally opposite service area. If the serve touches any part of the non-volley line, it is considered “short” and results in a fault.
Double-Bounce Rule and Subsequent Hits:
Following the service, both the serve and return must bounce before being hit (double-bounce rule). Subsequent hits can be struck before or after the ball has bounced. However, the server has only one service attempt, except in the case of a let, where the ball hits the top of the net but still lands in the proper service court.
Faults:
Non-Volley Zone and Faults:
Players standing in the non-volley zone, also known as the kitchen, or on the non-volley line may not strike the ball before it bounces. It’s essential to respect this rule to maintain fairness during the game. Faults occur when the ball hits the net or goes out of bounds. Additionally, if the ball bounces twice before being hit by the receiver, it results in a fault for the receiver.

Net Contact and Other Faults:
If a player, their clothing, or paddle touches the net while the ball is in play, it is considered a fault. Similarly, if the ball hits a player or their clothing, it results in a fault. Additionally, if the ball hits the ceiling, wall, or any other permanent object before landing in the opponent’s court, it is also considered a fault.
By familiarizing yourself with the rules of singles pickleball, you’ll be well-prepared to step onto the court with confidence. Remember to follow the specific guidelines regarding scoring, serving, faults, and court positioning to ensure a fair and enjoyable game for all.
